Description

Encanto was one of our favorite themes for our children’s birthday parties. Picking out a desert was easy when planning a little girl’s party. She wanted Isabell, which meant we were all set as long as we used purple and flowers. Then my son wanted a Bruno party. We were stumped. We thought about his character and came up with three things; the color green, sand, and glass. So how do we incorporate that into a child’s birthday snack?

Glass

The first step was to make glass. What candy can look like glass? Lollipops! We always love being challenged to make something we have never done before. We played with a few different recipes and found the perfect one. Warning it is almost as sharp as glass. As excited as I was that we created this, I was also nervous giving it to children and did warn all parents. The other plus of making this glass was that we figured out how to make LOLLIPOPS!!!! Stay tuned for more flavors.

Sand

When Mirabel opened the door to Bruno’s room, it was a dessert with sand. When we walked, sand shook off of him, so this was a part of his character. So how do we make edible sand? There are many options, but we settled on one, GRAHAM CRACKERS. We took graham crackers in a sandwich bag and ground them up. The kiddos loved taking this task on. Once smooshed, we had SAND!

Green

We made the glass green by placing food coloring into it. We did play with different types but found that gel food coloring is what worked best. We also added gel food coloring to the frosting used to hold the sand and glass.

Now we had the glass, sand, and color green. We felt like going away from the traditional cupcake and also wanted to save some time. For our base cake, we used Hostess Ding Dong Cakes. They were perfect! We put them as a base, added some green frostings on top, sprinkled some graham cracker sand, and then put some green glass sticking out on top!

Ingredients

Scale

Glass

2/3 cup of corn syrup (the clear version)

3/4 cup of water

2 cups of granualted white sugar

2-3 Drops of Gel green food coloring (depending on desired color)

Powdered sugar

Candy thermometer

Parchment paper

Cake and toppings

20 Ding Dongs

White frosting

Graham Crackers

2 Gallon zip lock bag

Instructions

Wash our hands! Make it fun and a habit for children.

Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Kiddos can help cut the piece to fit the pan.

In a saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water. It can be done on the counter so the children can assist in measuring and pouring the ingredients.

Place the saucepan on the stove and put on medium heat. Place the candy thermometer on the pot and constantly stir until the thermometer measures 300 degrees. Have patience. It will hit the temperature.

Once the temperature is achieved, take the pot off the heat, add food coloring and mix.

Then immediately pour it onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Cover it and allow it to harden for 2 hours.

Once hardened, place on the counter and give each child a spoon. Have them take turns “breaking” the glass using the back of the spoon.

Be careful and place pieces in a gallon bag. Have your child sprinkle powdered sugar on; this will help with moisture control.

Cake and Topping

Unwrap the Ding dongs and place them on a serving dish. It is an excellent opportunity for a young child to practice opening packages.

Take gel food coloring and place a few drops into the frosting until you get the desired color.

Place graham crackers in a gallon bag. Seal the bag and let the kiddos have it. They can smoosh the graham crackers until they look like sand.

Take a tablespoon of frosting and place it on top of the ding dong. Have the kiddos sprinkle some “sand” on and stick some “glass “in the center. (*** Be careful as the candy glass can be as sharp are glass)

ENJOY and talk about Bruno all you want!!!
