Description

The crisp air, the colors are changing, and it is about to be pumpkin spice. Pumpkin Spice donuts are a delicious addition to the fall season. Some say that people have gone too far with pumpkin spice; I don’t trust those people. Our home is half gluten-free, so you can also find our gluten-free Pumpkin Spice donuts recipe on our page.

In our household, we have children ranging from teenagers to toddlers. Cooking with them is essential to us; we work with each age group differently. When working with toddlers, it is important to be fully prepared. Toddlers enhance their fine motor skills by pouring the ingredients in and mixing the batter. The actual measurements aren’t meaningful to them at this age. To reduce the chaos that can ensue during cooking with toddlers, being prepared is key. We found this small ramekin’s to be extremely helpful. We measure their different ingredients, and they can quickly pour them into bowls. This has made cooking with toddlers so much more fun.

Ingredients

Scale

1 egg

2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

2 tablespoons of melted unsalted butter

2 tablespoons of milk

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

3/4 cup o pumpkin puree

1/2 cup of brown sugar

1/4 cup of granulated sugar

1 1/4 cups of all-purpose unbleached flour

1 teaspoon of baking soda

1/2 teaspoon of salt

1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice

Toppings

1/4 cup of granulated sugar

3 tablespoons of melted butter

1 tablespoon of pumpkin pie spice

Instructions

  1. Remind your littles to wash their hands. We make it like a ritual, I ask “What do we do first?”
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  3. Beat the egg until it becomes fluffy.  Add the oil, butter, vanilla extract, and sugar.  Allow the kiddos to pour and beat the egg.
  4. Mix in the pumpkin purée.
  5. Add in your sugars and then your dry ingredients (baking soda, salt, cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice) Spoke above about using the ramekins so that the kiddos can easily pour into the batter.  We also smell the ingredients when they go in.  My children love to know the different smells ie Vanilla.
  6. Slowly add the flour, scrapping the sides of the bowl.  Hand the spatula to them. Allow them the task of scrapping.
  7. Spray your donut pan with cooking spray.  Cut small hole in pipping bag to allow air.  Put piping bag over a pint glass.  Fill pippin bag with batter.  Cut hole bigger in piping bag depending on the size of he donut you are looking for.  Using the pint glass the kiddos are able to easily pour into the pipping bag without mess.
  8. Pipe donuts into the donut pan.
  9. Cook for 10-12 minutes on middle rack.
  10. Allow to cool for a few minutes after they bake.
  11. Combine the sugar and pumpkin pie spice mix.
  12. Brush the donuts with the melted butter then dip them into the sugar.  We call this painting the donuts.  I give them the pastry brush and they paint the butter on.
  13. Enjoy them nice and fresh or seal them in a bag.  We like to re heat them in the toaster if they last past an hour.
